How they work

This is how your Electronic Water Descaler works:-

By coiling aerials around the cold water feed to a building or individual appliances, a series of very low frequency radio frequencies can be induced electronically into the water.

These frequencies run in BOTH DIRECTIONS in the body of the water and cause the bonding together of tiny impurities, probably atoms of Iron or Lead or other metals to produce clusters. These minuscule “sub-microscopic clusters” are so small that they cannot be seen by normal optical methods.

Remaining in the water in huge quantities for up to 8 hours they nevertheless will start to break up as soon as the water loses connection with the main body of water being treated and the frequencies stop. This is important with water in a header tank, which is unconnected with the rising main. Here the water rapidly loses its conditioned status so it is essential to treat the water again particularly as the water from the header tank goes into the hot water cylinder which scales up rapidly if left untreated. The LP2 unit has been designed for just this purpose as it has two sets of aerials and so can treat the rising main and the cold down service to the hot water cylinder.

Now, when the cold water is heated, the Calcium and Carbonate ions in solution (the dissolved salts of chalk) use these clusters as nuclei for crystal formation instead of the normal deposit areas such as heating elements. The reason for this is that the total surface area of the clusters is so vast that they become the preferred alternative for crystal seeding. The result is water in which the Calcium and Carbonate ions have deposited out to form what can be likened to “chalk dust” in the body of the water. These tiny crystals remain in suspension and do not form deposits although they can form a white sludge at the bottom of a tank if the water is static.

Once this “chalk dust” has been formed, the surrounding water is now much softer although there will still be some free Calcium ions so the water cannot claim to be totally soft-just softer. The softer water causes Limescale to now gradually break down and eventually even the most scaled up appliance will become free of scale.

What the experts say - Andrew Goldsworthy

Electromagnetic Water Conditioners – The Theory by Andrew Goldsworthy 2006

Physically conditioned water (or magnetic water as it is sometimes called) was first discovered by the Russians around the beginning of the last century. It was originally made by making water flow rapidly (around a metre per sec) between the poles of a moderately powerful permanent magnet (100 mT or more). Water treated in this way had the power to remove and prevent the formation of limescale in boilers and plumbing. It also had biological effects such as the stimulation of plant growth and rapid changes in the size of animal internal organs (See Presman AS “Electromagnetic Fields and Life” Plenum Press NY 1970).

Magnetic fields almost certainly have more than one effect on water (See www.lsbu.ac.uk/water) but probably the most relevant from our standpoint is their effect on suspended colloidal particles.

Most colloids of biological origin are negatively charged and attract a shell of positively charged ions, with di or multivalent ions dominating because of their extra charge. When water containing these particles flows through a magnetic field, the Lorentz forces drive the negative particles and their oppositely charged ionic shells in opposite directions. The effect is greater for ions, such as calcium, with more than one charge and these tend to be preferentially lost from their parent particles and replaced by less affected monovalent ions. This leaves the particles in the conditioned water in a metastable state, which is relatively deficient in calcium. They can then attract ambient free calcium ions to restore their original stable state. During this period, they act as excellent nuclei for the crystallisation of calcium salts, so that when the water is heated the salts that would normally form hard limescale on the hot surface, crystallise on the particles instead and remain in suspension. If the conditioned water is flowing rapidly, it can even remove scale that has already formed.

The conditioning effect of a permanent magnet conditioner increases with the speed of water-flow and also with the strength of the magnet (i.e. it is the rate of change of the magnetic field that matters) however there are practical limits to both. To some extent, it can be improved by having several magnets so that the water is conditioned repeatedly, but there is also a limit to this.

Electronic water conditioners avoid these problems by making the magnetic field move rather than the water. They use pulses of the order of microtesla delivered at several kHz from coils around the water supply pipe. The very rapid rate of change of the field at the beginning and end of each pulse now gives the conditioning effect and high field strengths are no longer required. Also, the high frequency improves matters by giving multiple conditioning cycles as the water passes relatively slowly through the coils.

As you can see from the above, pulses or square waves will be more effective than sine waves but polarity doesn’t seem to be important. Moderately high frequencies (usually in the audio range) are used to give multiple conditioning cycles as the water flows through the device. Sometimes water conditioners sweep the frequency used by an octave or so to exploit any possible resonance effects in the ion exchange process, and sometimes relatively complex wave forms are used with several frequencies superimposed. They don’t use the ion cyclotron frequencies for inorganic ions since these fall into the ELF region (e.g. calcium is 32Hz and potassium is 16Hz in the Earth’s magnetic field). It is conceivable that such frequencies might improve the rate of exchange of the relevant ions on the colloidal particles, but this would be more than offset by the reduced number of cycles to which the water is exposed during its passage through the conditioner.

Finally, just one more point about the use of permanent magnets to condition water. It is in fact possible to condition stationary water with a permanent magnet, but the process is very slow (of the order of hours). This is because there has to be motion through the field to provide the necessary energy. In this case, it probably comes from the Brownian movement of the colloidal particles in the stationary field and it is relatively infrequent that these will acquire enough energy to drive the necessary ion exchange.

The Science behind the LP range by Dr W. Abioun

Hard water is water, which contains the dissolved salt of Calcium Carbonate. Acidic rainwater falling through a geological rock formation consisting of Calcium Carbonate crystals such as Limestone or similar causes it to dissolve into the water. The main reason the rain becomes acidic is because Carbon Dioxide gas (the greenhouse gas) becomes absorbed by the rain turning it into a weak acid called Carbonic acid. It is this acid that dissolves away the Limestone rock. The dissolved salts become free ions of Ca++ and HCO3– and these stay in solution until the water is heated at which point the Carbon Dioxide “blows off” and the ions join together again to form solid crystals of Limescale. A sudden reduction in cold water pressure will also remove the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and cause precipitation. This can be seen in cold water pipes where there is a sharp bend and scale develops and on the washers on cold taps, both places where the pressure can change suddenly.

The hardness of the water depends on how rich it is in free Calcium ions. The higher the Calcium contents the harder the water. Of course, hard water is very good for your health. It is the fundamental building block for teeth and bones. It also has a beneficial effect on the heart. Soft water is reckoned not to be so good for you.

To make hard water soft it is necessary to remove the Calcium ions in solution and this is normally done with a water Softener using salt. Here, the Sodium ions in the salt (Na+) are exchanged for Calcium ions in the water. This process is known as “ion exchange”. Many people however because of the cost, plumbing requirements and addition of chemicals now favour the preferred method of hard water treatment – ELECTRONIC!

So, how else can we sort out the problem of free Calcium ions in hard water? The answer is by treating the water with a selection of low frequency electro-magnetic radio waves.

This is how it works:
By coiling aerials around the cold water feed to a building or individual appliances, a series of very low frequency radio frequencies can be induced electronically into the water. This effect runs in BOTH DIRECTIONS in the body of the water and causes the bonding together of tiny impurities, probably atoms of Iron or other metals. These minuscule “sub-microscopic clusters” are so small that they cannot be seen by normal optical methods. Remaining in the water in huge quantities for up to 8 hours they nevertheless will start to break up as soon as the water loses connection with the main body of water being treated. This is important with water in a header tank, which is unconnected with the rising main, but providing the water is used in a reasonable period, it still remains “conditioned” and will continue to perform by preventing and removing limescale.

Now, when the cold water is heated, the Calcium and Carbonate ions in solution use these clusters as nuclei for crystal formation instead of the normal deposit areas such as heating elements.

Strangely enough, the amount of energy required to achieve this conditioning effect is quite small and the skill is in producing a sharp clean square wave. Little Plumber employs a specially designed digitally enhanced circuit to produce an extremely efficient range of square waves with low power consumption. There is simply no need to produce huge voltage outputs to achieve excellent results. This is simply like taking a “sledge hammer to crack a nut”

Dr Abioun has conducted research into the efficacy of electronic water conditioners.

Just amazing, truly amazing.

I had one of your LP2 units about 3 weeks ago and it has worked well beyond our expectations. Taps and showers that were scaled up are literally sparkling and we have no limescale left anywhere!
The water is softer and I am so pleased I would like to order another 3 units for some of our other properties.

Well done
Brian from Spalding Lincs.

Hi Gavin Thank you very much for your help. I look forward to receiving the latest amazing Little Plumber. The water here is so hard there were white lumps coming out of the tap when we moved in 7 years ago. However your Little Plumber has solved all that and I have never had problems with washing machines or dishwashers either – all of which I put down to your lovely little efficient device.

Kind regards Jane

Hello Gavin

As discussed, I would like to add the following feedback on our unit:
Still working after 7 years!
The LP1 is an effective and reliable unit for preventing lime scale.
Years of regularly descaling kettles and showerheads are a thing of the past.
The combi boiler is of the same vintage and is providing trouble free hot water.
What’s more, the LP1 is easy to install and no plumbing is involved!

Best wishes,

Melvyn

Dear Gavin,

I installed the Little Plumber 2 + in our loft (as no electrical outlet in the airing cupboard) 4 days ago, and already there have been noticeable changes in the water. The taste is different, we are using less washing up liquid and the shower screen is easier to clean, but it is early days.

We live in a mild hard water area (Warwick) and so I’m assuming that we will benefit more quickly than those in harder water areas.

We have a vented system and, based on your advice, attached the LP2+ aerials to both the rising main and the cold down pipe to the hot water tank.

You are the only company that advised me to do this, and I understand that if one of these devices is attached only to the raising main on vented systems (i.e. with a cold water header tank in the loft) only the cold water will be treated and not the hot water. So I am very grateful I spoke to you before placing an order.

I have recommended LP2+ to my sister, who lives in a very hard water area, and hope she will  also benefit from this amazing technology.

Best wishes,

Paul Jones

Little Plumber LP2

From a very happy customer living in Oxfordshire
and for so many years suffering the penalty of Hard Water.

Some of my pipes have had to be replaced because they totally furred up. But after fitting a Little Plumber unit (In 15 minutes) the damaging effect of Hard Water has come to an end.I fitted the unit and thought that maybe, if I was lucky, after a month or two I would notice a small difference.Imagine my amazement today, less than two weeks after fitting Little Plumber, when I looked inside my kettle, which for years has been coated in calcium, to find it CLEAN and CLEAR of all but a couple of chunks still clinging to a small part of the spout.I rinsed it vigorously and the very last chunks washed away so that the kettle is now spotless inside.
If my kettle is spotless so are my water pipes!

Well done Little Plumber. I would never have believed this could happen

Gavin.

Good to chat to you today. Just wanted to let you know that in March 2006 I purchased two LP1s.
I live in Sandwich, East Kent which is notorious for its hard water.
The Little Plumbers have been  fantastic & after all this time they are still performing perfectly.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these to anyone doubting their efficiency.
One of the great spin offs has been that my combi boiler is still in good condition after 18years of service!

Hello Gavin,

I trust the New year finds you well.

I purchased an LP2 from you back in November for Primrose Cottage and am thrilled with its performance – thank you.

I wonder if you would mind helping me with an enquiry? Is my water ‘ionised’ and is it suitable for using in household appliances such as irons and floor steamers?

Also I have been extolling the virtues of my LP to a friend who lives in a very modest end of terrace 3 bed 1 bathroom property, I told her she would probably need the LP1, am I correct and would you mind letting me know the price so that I can pass it on.

Many thanks and best wishes

DEAR GAVIN

I BOUGHT A LITTLE PLUMBER 8 YEARS AGO FOR MY HOUSE IN EAST KENT WHERE THE WATER IS VERY HARD,HAVING TRIED OUT A WATER SOFTNER WITH SALT  IT WAS ALWAYS GOING WRONG SO I  BOUGHT THE LITTLE PLUMBER , THE SHOWER WHICH WITHOUT LITTLE PLUMBER WOULD NEED DESCALER EVERY WEEK WENT MONTHS BEFORE IT NEEDED CLEANING ,I HAVE NOW MOVED TO SURREY AND HAVE BOUGHT  ANOTHER BECAUSE I WAS SO PLEASED WITH IT  IN KENT, IN 8 YEARS IT NEVER WENT WRONG AND IT TAKES  UP NO ROOM AT ALL.

Just to say, we are very happy with the Little Plumber unit we purchased from you recently, so much so that we have given your contact details to our local plumber, C. P.

and have encouraged him to become a Little Plumber installer.

I hope that he will make contact with you as it is a very good system and much better than water softeners.

Dear Gavin,
>  I would class myself as a person who is not that easily impressed and can be critical ,so felt it was only right that
> i emailed you feed back on the Little Plumber 2 .
>  Firstly , after having a new kitchen and utility room installed , i then realised it would have been sensible to have a water softener , as living in Deal Kent it is a very hard water area . There was no space for a big /bulky traditional water softener, so i thought i would see if there was an alternative and came across your website and the LP .I read all about it , spoke to you and realised i had nothing to loose ( i.e. full refund up to 1 year if not happy ) .So it was fitted in august , and after approximately 4 weeks i noticed less scale in the kettle, and my hair was much less tangly after a shower, and the shower screen is much easier to clean. More importantly my daughter suffers from quite bad atopic eczema and she has noticed her skin is less itchy ,and her bedding feels more comfortable on her skin.So i am very pleased i purchased the LP2 , and have recommended it to my friends. Having had a traditional water softner in the past ,they are a lot more expensive, plus the ongoing cost of the salt, ( and the mess if your not careful how its put in) and you loose a cupboard to house the softener .
>  Finally it was very easy to install , so i started out as a sceptic ( i put my receipt and the box in a safe place !) , now i am a  total convert to the benefits of the Little Plumber !

Dear Sir

I have been using your LP water softener successfully for many years.
Two weeks ago Thames Water came to do a survey on my house.
The Thames Water Surveyor was surprised at the condition of my water supply, pipes etc
in my property.
I told him that the LP water softener was 75% effective in dealing with the hard water in my area
and it is now likely that Thames Water will start to recommend that households install your product.
I thought you would like to know this as I think your Compoany is one of the best producers of this kind
of product.
I hope you find this information useful

Hi

Its good to hear that you are still in business since my daughter purchase an LP1& 2 from you about 6years ago.

My daughter lives in an apartment in a hard water area and the LP1 has made a big difference to showering, washing and making tea.

We were unable to connect to the main incoming supply at the kitchen sink so I had to connect it to the pipe that supplies the cylinder for the apartment.

We found that the tea from the main supply was not nice so we decided to try the cylinder supply and what a difference it made and that for me was a true test.

Hello Gavin,

a few years ago I purchased a LP1 Water Softener from you and it was supplied with a French plug as it was to be fitted in our holiday home in Normandy.  The unit was so successful that we retrieved it and brought it back to the UK this summer when the holiday home was sold.  Unfortunately I have mislaid the installation instructions that included a diagram showing the wires coiled around the input supply pipe.  I have watched the installation video but it quickly glosses over this part.  Please, do you have an on-line version of the instructions that I can view before installing it in our UK home?  Failing that can you please give me written instructions?

yours sincerely

I have been fitting your Little Plumber units in the London area for 3 years now. The customers have been very pleased with the level of service
and follow ups tell me that the products work well if they are installed correctly.
I have now fitted hundreds of Little Plumbers and can honestly say it has been a pleasure working with you.
Compared to a salt softener which requires maintenance and a dedicated drinking tap it is not surprising more people are opting for this simple alternative to treat
their hard water in the London area.

Hi Gavin,

Earlier this year I bought an LP1 for my house which has a combi boiler. I have installed this in the airing cupboard on the cold feed just before it enters the boiler – mainly because it is the easiest point with a 13A socket available.

It is working very well, and the scale that used to build up around my taps has now gone, and I don’t think I’ve had to descale the shower head since!.

I am very pleased and have recommended your products to loads of people..!

Ten years ago we bought and installed 8 x LP3 electronic de-scaling units from Splendid Products Ltd.

The units installed were to help prevent and remove limescale on our calorifiers and in general throughout the building.
Abingdon is in a hard water area.

We have been pleased with the LP3 units which over time have resulted in cost savings by maintaining the efficiency of the calorifiers and also have seemingly prevented limescale build up in general such as the shower areas.

I would say the units have been a very good investment and seem to be working well even after 10 years.

Dear Gavin

We live in a high water hardness area our water source being chalk aquifers.
2 months after the installation of the ‘Little Plumber 2’ we have noticed some changes;
these changes I have seen have been significant rather than profound.

The top 3 areas I have witnessed some difference are:
60-70%  Reduction in hard water marking on shower doors & enclosure/window washing/car
60-70%  Reduction in scum marks
Being able to reduce soap based products by about a third.

I hope these comments will help your further developments & improvements.

Hi there Gavin at Little Plumber!

Just had to write to let you know that my friend has now installed my [lovely!] LP1 … …

I had only recently moved when I placed my order for the LP1, as I noticed when I arrived in my new home, how “harsh” the water appeared to be in comparison to that of my previous property which had a very similar device installed and of which was well-over 10 years old – and still working perfectly, when I left.

My friend is somewhat sceptical about such devices – I’m not. Actually, I am now in love with my LP1 ……

Wishing you a prosperous 2013!

I have had your little plumber descaler for just over a year and it has worked perfectly.  I live in a hard water area and the water is now much softer.  I use less detergent in the washing machine and also less bath creme in the bath.  It has made a big difference to the water – even tea and coffee taste better.  It’s great and I wouldn’t be without it.

Hi

We had the LP1 fitted in our house in Spain for 10 years and  were very pleased with the results and was then” persuaded” to change to a magnetic system. We gave our LP1 to a local charity for fund raising. We now realise[and had it confirmed by a local plumber] that we had the best system availalable. We need to purchase another LP1 which will unfortunately cost a lot more than our original one!!

How long will it take to arrive in Spain and is it guaranteed to arrive.

I bought 2 of these units as they don’t work past a break in the flow, ie. a water tank. If your mains in and return pipe from the tank are next to each other at some point, then a larger unit can be used which works out a bit cheaper. That said, even at £200 outlay they are a good buy in my opinion if you live in a hard water area. We felt the improvement after only 3 days with softer water which lathered up better but after a short time we had no more limescale around the taps and our bath cold water tap, which needed changing as it wouldn’t open up enough to get a decent flow, improved a lot.I wanted to protect the boiler mainly and this will, saving me money for heating engineers to be called out for boiler breakdown caused by heat exchanger furring up. They are easily fitted and take up little space, just turn on and check occasionally that they are flashing.

I have always had a salt driven water softener in my life. For the last 15 years I have lived on a boat in Chelsea. Two years ago my boat water softener came to the end of its life. My water suddenly got hard, no suds and a nasty scum in the basin, the shower head and taps became calcified.

I was about to lash out on a new machine when I saw your advertisement. I rang you to ask if the device would work on a boat and received clear, sensible, advice that it would. I installed an LP1. The installation process was simplicity itself, though I slightly wondered whether the device really would live up to all that was claimed for it.

Now, three months later, my water is sudsy again, no scum in the basin and the calcification is disappearing from the shower head.

I am so impressed with the unit that I am about to buy another one for my house in France, which has very hard water.

Thank you very much Little Plumber for the water softener and the splendid back up service.  ……And he did on March 31st 2012

Best wishes

Dear Gavin,  I did purchase one of your units and installed it at our property in northern France.  Installation was simple and took about 15 minutes, helped by an existing power supply.  The results have since been positive with remarkable reduction of scale on kitchen and bathroom surfaces, kettle element, tap edges etc.

Hi Gavin,

You may recall we have a LP4 installed in one of our large rental properties and I am pleased to say it is working well. We have a small amount of lime scale on surfaces from time to time but nothing like we would get without it I am sure. We are paying by installments – I think we were one of the first!

I am writing because my own salt tablet water softener has finally given up the ghost after 14 years and I thought it would be sensible to buy your LP2 for my own home.

I found the LP1 very easy to install even though I am a pensioner. After about two weeks the results were nothing short of incredible. The first thing I noticed was the Pyrex dish which had become stained over the years suddenly became stain free after being in the dishwasher. Also cups and glassware simply sparkled for the first time in ages. I also noticed how much softer the water had become just by feeling the cold water from the tap. I have nothing but praise for the LP1 and would now like to order another one for my daughter.

Calne 21st September 2011

Hi

You may remember that I am a local handyman living in Calne. I bought a Little Plumber LP1 unit from you. It has been so successful that I have now sold another 4 to my neighbours who have been to my house and witnessed the results. Everyone here loves them and wonder why with what they cost to buy and run, everyone who suffers from limescale as we do doesn’t buy one.

Dear Gavin

I have bought & installed your water softener and it has done everything you claimed. The water in Southampton is probably the hardest in the UK .The difference it has made has been remarkable, for washing and drinking. I am so impressed that i have just ordered one for my son.

Many Thanks

Hello Gavin,

Just a note to say that the LP2  delivered to me here in Catalunya two weeks

ago,is already showing fantastic results.

We have stopped buying viacal which we have been using in great quantities

to remove the dried residue of the calc in our water.

We were on the verge of installing a machine which would have consumed 75 kilos

of salt every three months.

Of course my wife is claiming thr credit as she saw a report of your product some

time ago and has been telling me to do something about it ever since.

Installation of the LP2 was simple and I can’t thank you enough for your courteous

service.

Dear Gavin

After several years of suffering from heavy limescale deposits, we’ve recently installed an LP1 in our home in France. To our amazement and absolute delight we began to see the effects after only a couple of days despite being fully prepared to wait for several weeks to see if it was doing the job. Each day the water just gets better and better. We’ve been so impressed that we’ve ordered one for our French neighbour who we’re convinced will be equally impressed. It’s a real pleasure to be able to buy and recommend a British made product at a reasonable price which delivers as advertised; and with very swift efficient delivery too. Thank you for improving our quality of life as well as the longevity of our household appliances!

Hi Gavin

We have been installing and supplying Little Plumbers to hundreds of satisfied customers here on the Costa Blanca for the past 4 years and would recommend the product to be fitted here in Spain. The LP units are available with 2-pin Euro plugs and because the water here is one of the hardest areas in Spain we are delighted with the results.
We are happy to be the only authorized supplier of Little Plumbers in Spain and will continue to be so for many more years to come

Hi

I purchased one of these about two months ago and I have to say I am very pleased with the results.

I wasn’t sure if all the claims were true but it has certainly made a difference to the softness of our water

and we live in a hard water area, so I would recommend this product to anyone.

Gavin

It has to be said that after only 2.5 weeks of use of the Little Plumber we have already noticed a surprisingly marked difference in water quality in our house. Not only is there a need for less washing up liquid but there is also less scum in the bath. The water tastes pleasanter whether in cold or hot drinks or just neat.

Having replaced a salt softener with a Little Plumber I thought there might a need be a need for both as we have quite a large property so I have left all the connections. From the results so far, the salt softener can stay in the garden shed with quite a saving in the rising cost of salt.  I was very pleased to note as well that the Little Plumber hardly uses any electricity.

An excellent product, well done and thanks.

Dear Gavin
This is just a note to say how pleased I am with the “Little Plumber” scale remover I bought recently from you. It takes a few months to see the results but the water is much softer than before and there is not much staining from lime in the sink or bath. I live in the area where the water is very hard. I hope this may help other people who wish to try this gadget with hardly any maintenance cost.

I was highly sceptical at first, but I think I’ve been converted.,
4 Sep 2010

Let’s face it, the thought of pulsing a few square electronic waves into a water pipe to stop calcites from bonding to metal seemed a bit far fetched, and rather the stuff of a bad 1950’s sci-fi movie. The instructions do point out that you will need to give Little Plumber about 6 weeks before you see any results, and I must admit, I started to see a difference after about 2 months. The first difference you see is that the scale on your taps begins to soften and then slowly disappear. Evidence indeed of something going on inside the pipes themselves. Then the water does begin to taste a little softer (or less “bitter” if you like) if you are plagued by hard water as we London folks are. So, there must be something in the claims that this little device is doing something clever. Not sure I would bring myself to recommend it, but that said, I have absolutely no intention of ever removing it !

“Just to say that our units have been installed now for about four weeks and the result is amazing. I was very skeptical as to whether they would work as well as it said on your website so I was genuinely surprised when limescale seemed to dissolve from taps, our shower, the kettle etc. All the household taps now look like new and I have taken to polishing them each time they are used because they look so good! Oh and my water filter in the kitchen (of which I was truly ashamed because you couldn’t see through the build-up of scale on the outside) also now looks like a new one.
If everyone I have recommended Little Plumber to ends up buying one, I reckon I deserve a commission!!!”
Kate, UK

“As soon as i installed an LP1 at my residence in Jaipur, Rajasthan The results were seen the next day, Water from the overhead tank started tasting better. Day by day scum is also removed from bathroom fittings. I have suggested it to many of my friends and relatives.”
Shri Anil Sharma, Jaipur, India

“We are VERY impressed with our new LP Solo! I was concerned since the only access I had for installation was around the flexible copper tubing leading to our hot water heater, but overnight we had softer, sudsier and better tasting water. If our decorative fountains are an accurate indication of how fast the minerals build up in pipes, Lord only knows how ANY water is getting through our 20 year old plumbing.
“I know it will take time, but I’m anxious to see the difference.”
Bill, Sedona, AZ. USA

“In 2006 I bought an LP2 for my house and an LP1 for my daughter. We are both very pleased with the results and my daughter has noticed a significant drop in her heating bills. A great British product.”

Thanks Gavin.
By the way the LP1 unit works a treat.  –  It’s like a mini miracle.

Subject: RE: LP1 unit

“Hi! I recently purchased 2 of the Little Plumbers (working brilliantly by the way) and installed them to two of my customers. The trade supplier where i purchased them has shut down bussiness now. As they are two of my regular customers i was just wondereing if the product guarantee is still valid and where to go if there should be a problem with them as i would usually have returned to the place of purchase which obviously i can no longer do? I don’t anticipate any problems i just wanted to know if i would be able to contact Little Plumber directly if i needed to. Many thanks.”

“We were sceptical at first to this type of product so we carried out simulated tests expected on our boilers. To our surprise the units passed the rigid laboratory test simulating the boiler condition and we have now been spared the cost of regularly descaling the boilers with chemicals, normally about P300,000 (around £3000)”

“We bought an LP1 in October 2007 and just thought you would like to know that it has performed extremely well. The water is diamond hard here and it has literally saved us a fortune. If you want someone to sell them for you I’d be only to happy.”
R.Caird Bury St Edmunds

“I bought an LP device about a month ago and just wanted to let you that that it is working really well. My two small daughters had very dry skin, even when using baby lotion after every bath, and it has almost completely gone now. Thankyou very much”

“Greetings from Spain. I bought an LP2 from you and thought you would like to know that it has been a huge success. We are olive farmers in Andulacia. We have reformed our farmhouse on the side of a mountain at 3000feet and the water is provided by an underground stream. The water is exceptionally hard and wiping down a draining board left a scum of white deposit!
I wired the two circuits to the water ‘into the house’ feed and the feed into the hotwater storage tank (sealed system). All the comments you made on the benefits of the system are absolutely true and we are really delighted! Thanks.”
John Shaw, Spain

We have had you LP3 units installed for 7 years now and our down-time on boilers has been NIL. I cannot imagine how much money your units have saved us but it must be thousands.
Nick Barnard,Abingdon Scool,Abingdon 24th September 2010

“We fitted a series of LP3 units to the main boiler cold water feed and we are very pleased with the results. Boiler breakdown has been virtually nil and our heating costs have dropped significantly”
Nick Barnard, Buildings Manager, Abingdon Boys School, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, UK

“We installed some LP3 units about four years ago to prevent scale build up in our plating units and I must say we have been very pleased with them. The downtime caused by scaling no longer occurs and the units have saved us a great deal of time and money in our busy production unit”
Graham Simms, Production Manager, Hospital Metalcraft, Blandford Forum, UK

“We fitted LP products to treat our limescale and hard water problems. Whart a great product, so good I fitted them at home too”
M Hurst, Director, Paramount Chocolate Company, High Wycombe, UK

“Our unit is still flashing away and we have noticed the shower heads are cleaner and more suds.”
Duncan, Algarve, Portugal

“Just last week in our house, the plastic shower pipe sprung a leak due to its age so I replaced it. I could not believe the condition of the inside of the pipe. It was completely free of scale. Absolutely none and when I looked at the showerhead, it too was as clean as a whistle.
“I have checked with my customers, some of who have had their Little Plumber units for over 6 years and they all say the same thing – FANTASTIC! – No Scale anywhere and here in Cambridgeshire the water is very hard and seems to be getting harder as the water levels fall.
“This is one great product and not only saves wear and tear on appliances but must save a fortune in heating bills. I seriously think anyone living in a hard water area must have one of these since from what I have seen over the last 6 years there’s nothing better!”
Barry Hudson, Owner, B.A.S Domestic Appliance Repairs, UK

“Some 6 years ago I bought an LP1 unit for my own use and was so impressed by it that I purchased several more and offered to install them for some of my customers.
“I’m delighted with the little Plumber 2; we have been using it for 3 weeks now. It really does work, the shower water feels softer and we have less dry skin. The screen in the shower has stopped becoming caked in lime scale and the glass and tiles seem smoother and shinier. My wife has noticed the washing machine is using a lot less washing powder; we used to use 175 ml of powder now we use 125 ml of powder (better than using Calgon). Thoroughly recommend the product.”
Asad, UK

“We installed the LP units in September 2003 and over 5 years later are still very pleased with them. Not a trace of limescale anywhere and our heating is very efficient.
“Well done Little Plumber!”
Roger Cook, Grace Baptist Mission, Abingdon, UK

“Gavin, I’ve often wondered if these gadgets work and do you know what?……THEY DO!!!”
Alistair, North Walsham, Norfolk, UK

“My name is Paul and I have been a plumber in Poole for many years now.
I used to buy my Little Plumber de-scalers from a local plumbers merchant but when they stopped stocking them in 2003 I decided to buy them directly from Splendid Products Limited. I have now bought and installed over 60 different units ranging from LP1’s LP3’s LP2’s and my favourite and frankly the one I sell the most of the LPSOLO. In all this time I can honestly say I have heard nothing but praise for these units and indeed I have never had a complaint about them. One particular installation involved a dentist whose water pipes had all but scaled up and ran beneath a marble tiled floor. He was at the point of asking me to remove the flooring and replace the pipes when I suggested fitting an LP Solo. The pipes cleared quite quickly and to this day the flooring is still in place. This would have been an expensive venture and apart from the cost of replacing the pipes and marble there is no guarantee that in a few years the pipes would once again have scaled up. Now, when I am repairing, replacing or maintaining appliances or fittings I will invariably ask my customer if they would like me to fit a Little Plumber unit. I have seen for myself how during the last 7 years premises that I look after which have been pestered by limescale have become scale free.
I am grateful over the years to the help I have received from Splendid Products, for the very ethical way they have behaved and for the prompt efficiency they have displayed. What’s the downside? Well eventually I suppose there will be less repair work for me to do as so many plumbing problems are caused by limescale, but I will have done my best for my customer. That in itself is satisfaction.”

We own and let properties in Dorset & Hampshire and like so many people suffer greatly from lime scale. We had considered installing and operating a traditional ion exchange water softener, however, the capital cost of one of these units for our largest property (a 17 bedroom HMO), plus the running costs and maintenance, made us consider an alternative.

In May 2009 we approached Splendid Products Limited with a view to buying one of their Commercial Units, the LP4. This is an electronic water conditioner, which claims to remove and prevent lime scale and make hard water appear softer.

As we were somewhat sceptical as to how effective this unit would be, we asked if it might be possible to rent the equipment. The Company were very helpful and we installed a rented LP4 in June 2009. It was extremely easy to fit and required no invasive plumbing, just a 13amp plug socket near the incoming water main.

Now after 9 months we are entirely happy with the results and can confirm that the LP4 is a very credible and far cheaper alternative to a traditional water softener. In addition it requires absolutely no maintenance and running costs are truly negligible.

I can thoroughly recommend the LP4 and Splendid Products.

Dear Mr Beaumont

22nd January 2010

When you originally approached us with a solution to the never-ending problem of the steam generation canister scaling up with the resultant closure of the steam room, I was along with our maintenance manager somewhat dubious.

Well the LP3 unit, which we installed, has done the job brilliantly and to my knowledge the down time for the steam room has been zero.

This has of course been an excellent result and has saved us a lot of money as we have not had to change the canister nor have we had to pay call-out charges to engineers to come and fix the problem.

In addition of course our members have enjoyed continuous use of the steam room, which certainly before installation of the LP3 they were not able to do.

Kind Regards

LITTLE PLUMBER STOCKIST for 10 YEARS

We have been stocking and selling the Little Plumber range of water conditioners for 10 years this year.

In that time we can honestly say we have never had one returned nor has any customer had anything but praise for the products which they have bought from us.

We have sold all three domestic models, the LP1 LP2 and SOLO.

The supplier Splendid Products Ltd, has always helped us with in store promotional displays and leaflets and we feature on their web-site.

The Little Plumber range removes and prevents limescale and because we live in a hard water area, our customers are pleased to be able to easily install something which stops limescale and is far cheaper and seemingly just as effective as a traditional water softener.

We have the highest regard for Splendid Products Ltd and their excellent range of Little Plumbers.

Leisure at Chelteneham

We purchased an LP3 on the recommendation of Travis at DeVere Venues to treat our steam generator a Carel Humisteam. The problem was the hard water in this area causing limescale to precipitate on the electrodes used to generate the steam. This of course meant that the steam room was out of commission a lot of the time much to annoyance of customers.
The LP3 has been a great success and we have had no problems with limescale since it was fitted. A great product.

Electronic Water Softeners

How they save money

With water treated by a Little Plumber water softener unit you have drinking water all round your property and available from every tap. As Calcium is good for you and helps developing children’s bones and teeth this is an additional bonus.

With the ever increasing cost of energy it is essential to have a really efficient plumbing system. When hard water becomes limescale it forms a thick layer of chalk on the heat exchangers in your water heating system which effectively acts as a thermal insulator. This STOPS the heat generator from heating efficiently so requiring more and more energy to heat the same amount of water. This is a complete waste of energy which increases your energy costs.

In addition the problems caused by hard water such as dry skin and eczema, poor use of soap and detergents are all too apparent. The old salt system of water softeners (ion exchange) is cumbersome and expensive and requires costly plumbing along with a need for a dedicated pipe for a supply of untreated cold water to your drinking tap. (which you will almost certainly use to fill your kettle, thus retaining the limescale problem in all boiled water!) It is not advisable to drink water treated by a salt water softener as it is bad for you plus the fact that it is not at all palatable!. In addition the extra water wasted down your drain every time the salt unit regenerates will add to your water bill and this is for water you haven’t even used.

Modern electronic water softener units such as the Little Plumber range require no chemicals or maintenance and can be fitted without plumbing and are an easy DIY installation for most people. The units deliver softer water as well as removing and preventing limescale at a fraction of the cost of the older style salt water softener systems which many people now regard as obsolete.

Which LP is right for me?

Choosing & Installing your LP unit.

Image of an installed LP1 unit

In order to choose the most appropriate Little Plumber limescale remover you need firstly to consider your type of plumbing system. Then you need to choose the size of house you have as follows:-

Unvented Plumbing Systems
(i.e. with Combination boiler or unvented Pressurised system such as Megaflow and no loft tank) (click image on right to enlarge)

Diagram of Unvented Plumbing System

Where? It really doesn’t matter where you install your LP unit as long as it’s on the COLD mains pipe. This is because the LP puts a “current” in the water like a beam of light, which travels up-stream and down-stream to the remotest parts of the cold plumbing system. It is NOTHING to do with the direction of the water flow!. Also it doesn’t matter whether the LP is lying on its side or upside down. A lot of people now use two-sided Velcro to attach the LP unit to a wall, as they really don’t weigh very much (under 200gms). Don’t worry about what the pipe is made of. LP works very well on all pipes including plastic, galvanised and copper. If your boiler is some distance from where your water enters the property you should fit a second LP unit on the cold pipe into the boiler. If you have a bigger property with say 5+ bedrooms you will need an LP2 on the cold pipe and you may also consider a dedicated LP1 on the cold feed to the boiler if the house has several bathrooms.

Vented Plumbing Systems
(i.e. with a Header Tank in the loft) (click image on right to enlarge)

Diagram of Vented Plumbing System

LP units will only treat the water if there is no break in it. With a tank in the loft, the water fills up the tank through a ball valve so there is a break in the current. The water in the tank becomes untreated.

You will either need to install 2 x LP1’s, one on your cold mains and one on the cold down service or if your cold mains pipe to the tank in the loft and the cold down service to your hot water cylinder run parallel together in your airing cupboard as they often do, you can fit an LP2 as in the diagram below. One aerial is wrapped around the cold mains and the other is wrapped around the cold down service. Don’t forget that the LP2 has 4 times the output of the LP1.

How to install LP2 into a vented system

You will also find power in the airing cupboard too either as a fused spur or a plug.
Have a look in your airing cupboard and if you have a 3-pin plug then installation of the LP2 is very easy. If not then you will need to ask an electrician or a plumber capable of electrical installation who holds a Part P certification.

You will also find a smaller tank in the loft, which is the top-up tank for the central heating. The water in the central heating system is sealed and already treated with a chemical to stop scaling so needs no further treatment. If you have a larger property with say 5+ bedrooms then you should install an LP2 on the cold mains and an LP1 on the cold down service to your hot water cylinder.

The LP Solo (the only one in the world) is equivalent in output to an LP1.

Larger properties with 10+ bedrooms will require an LP3 on the mains inlet and an LP2 on the cold down service. If you have a secondary return pipe to the boiler then another LP2 should be fitted to this.

You may find the chart below some help in deciding just which unit you require.

Technical Information

To prevent limescale from building up in your domestic pipes and appliances you can remove the Calcium Ions in the hard water by a process called ION EXCHANGE. This process is what happens in a water softener.

By putting SALT (NaCl) or SODIUM CHLORIDE as chemists call it into the water softener, the ions of Calcium Ca++ are EXCHANGED for ions of SODIUM Na++ such that the Calcium Ions are flushed down the drain and the Sodium Ions remain in the water. This EXCHANGE takes place on a column of RESIN. The water becomes SOFT but unfortunately should not really be drunk because Sodium Ions are not good for you. Calcium ions are good for you and are the building blocks of teeth and bones. Calcium is also a vital element in the metabolism of all cells so without Calcium they cannot function properly.

Water Softening Products are expensive

If you have a WATER SOFTENER fitted then you are required by law to have a dedicated COLD WATER drinking tap, which must have water coming straight from the mains and must not pass through the SOFTENER.

On the whole, SOFTENERS are expensive to buy and costly to maintain. There is also the necessity to fill the SOFTENER up with salt regularly.
